Cold Snap!

Yikes, but it's cold out there!

With night time low temperatures in the mid -20's Celsius, and daytime highs barely getting into the high teens below, getting the simplest things done (like laundry - downstairs pipes are frozen!) becomes a serious challenge!

Even at midday, it's too cold to be out much longer than half an hour, even if you're walking!

Poor Taela, short walks until this is over ...

Needless to day, having a regular photography outing, let alone a daily outdoor shoot, in these conditions is difficult! You know you're not going to be out long because batteries just won't stand up to the cold!

Here's today's photo, at -22C just as the fog banks were clearing:

First Triptych

I really like this photo and thought it would be a good candidate for a triptych.

This is my first effort at this technique in Photoshop ... no doubt there's a list a mile long of things wrong with it ... but for now I'm really chuffed with it!

Just when you start to lose faith ...

... a stunning shot presents itself!

ALWAYS have your camera with you!

New Location

We've just moved from western BC to eastern BC (about 10 hours' drive).

It takes time to adjust to a new location, finding places where the shooting's good ... I know that. Nevertheless, I'm getting depressed with what I've found around here so far. It seems so dry, dusty, and drab.

That said, we walked down by Windermere Lake over the weekend ... it was blowing a gale but presented some interesting photo op's and I got one worthy of sharing.

Wildlife Photography

Being outdoors, photographing the wonders of nature ... animals, plants, landscapes ... is one of the things I most enjoy doing!

One day, I'll get a longer, faster lens to extend my "reach" ... meanwhile, I'm having a blast with what I've got!

This isn't perfect, but it is the best squirrel shot I've got so far!

Pet Photography

This is a discipline of photography that I definitely want to get into ... today was the first time that I had the courage to take photo's while I chatted with other dog owners in the park and the dogs played.

Usually talking to the other dog walkers is no problem. It's just that I am still a bit self-conscious taking the camera out, and actually taking pictures "in front of strangers", you know?

Some Days ...

... the photography gods favour you!

This morning at dawn, I headed to the Callaghan Valley, hoping to catch a few bears before they turn in for their winter sleep. I saw three bears. The first two were really skittish and disappeared almost as soon as I saw them. But the third was very obliging and hung around so that I could get some pretty good shots:



While in the Callaghan, one gets a lovely view of Black Tusk, just as the sun is coming up:



On the way home, I glimpsed some rowers on Alta Lake, so got ahead of them and pulled into Rainbow Park to take advantage of the photo op:



While at the park, some Canada geese were grazing at the water's edge, with the fog hanging over Alta Lake, and the mountains towering above:



And just as I turned to leave, the fog started lifting and a dawn ray illuminated it in front of the dark massif of Whistler Mountain:
